Feed back

After showing 2 pieces of art I have had some feedback.

I should look into the punk eras with their collages and statement posters.  I will also look at a few illustrations made on issues that went on during that time.

If I was going to do the political approach then I would need to think about the audience as most have different opinions.  I'm best not to use what's happening at present and to not use faces as well to cause distress.  This was aimed at one of my pictures.  I will take away the face and add a made up bankers face instead.

I think I would be best to stay away from politics at the moment due to tension and people's opinions.

I will focus on what is happening with today such as technology, obesity, money etc using visual metaphors.

Presentation: what I would have liked to say

My presentation on Persuasion within poster design went OK but I will write the notes on here as I may have skipped over a few notes.
Slide 1:
For my project I want to explore how to persuade people's opinions on poster design.  Be that for advertisements or a campaign on opinions.  E.g PETA Think!
Slide 2:
Previous work.  Explored different themes but really wanted to stay with the graphic design element of the design so went for posters.  I haven't explored a lot of this subject but have looked at designers in the past who specialise in this such as Abraham Games and Saul Bass.
Slide 3:
Did a few art tests and ideas to see where my skills are within photoshop.  I tested with a stop smoking campaign poster and drew a few thumb nails for my next idea.  From them I can tell where my weakness lies and where to improve.  It also gives me a taste of how to do a campaign poster.  Hopefully this will help on more poster designs on messages and persuasions.
Slide 4/5:
I explored different strategies of persuasion and noticed that visual metaphors work well in receiving the viewers attention.  These work well with campaigns and advertisements, funny or shocking.  I am more interested in the visual element so this would be a great start on my poster design.
Slide 6:
Metaphors can attract viewers more due to the visual content.  John Holocroft explores the shock tactics through his illustration and show the different view on certain topics such as government, modern world, technology, etc.
Slide 7:
Subliminal is another tactic but rarely used as much now.  Most movie posters use this tactic as easter eggs for new movies, related movies, etc.  It was worrying during the 60s due to a social experiment with the popcorn and the "drink coca cola"
Slide 8:
Examples of subliminal.  Companies such as Marbolro got in trouble due to their tactics of having their logo in Barcode form on a race car.  When it speeds up it shows the image of their logo.  As promoting cigarettes is banned the company was fined.
Not only is products is subtly shown, in silence of the lambs poster, the moth has naked girls on the back in a shape of the skull.  It was a shock at first until I found out that it was homage to Salvador Dalis art work.  So it's art subliminally showing another art piece that would get viewers interested.
Slide 9:
Another subliminal part is the conspiracies.  These are widely known online that can be shared through different users.  An example of these would involve Disney and sex,  illuminati, 9/11,etc. I want to research on why some people are persuaded that they believe that there is a hidden message in a poster.
Slide 10:
So for my schedule I have a lot of things to do to make my project stay strong.  I plan to attend a Graphics Design festival in Glasgow and attend an open panel to discuss with designers on their work.  I would need to research a few more practioners and find out about their creative process.  I was thinking about interviews but I will search that online archive as it would be easier to find that specific subject. Lastly I want to try and make more poster designs that would persuade the public and test them to see if it changes opinions (campaigns) or if they want the product (advertisement).

Update

I had a meeting with one of my lectures to discuss my project and to help refine it down further. We noticed that I am more interested in the visual content rather than the advertising itself. I thought of this at the start of summer but was worried that it was too vague, however, It does give me the chance to explore different types of design.

I decided to look into Visual Metaphors and their persuasion with the public, e.g. campaigns, subtle messages etc within poster design. I like the impact that it can cause, positive or negative and how visual representation can look using objects and morphing the body.

I looked up a few photoshop techniques as I have not used that program in a while. I thought I would start with an art test to see if my skills are ok, what needs improving and how to use some tools. I made one campaign using a models photo with a cigarrete in her hand. I thought it would be a good start as an art test for a stop smoking campaign. I wanted the smoke to look like a choker or a noose around her neck to show the dangers it can cause.

After the edit i knew I had to improve a few skills.

  1. Text in Photoshop to stand out more and to go with the picture.
  2. Basic commands in Photoshop. I need to touch up on this
  3. To go further with the picture
I also want to experiment with morphing the bodies to create visual metaphors.

What I have done so far

I am currently at the stage of thinking of art tests towards my project. I will explore photo manipulation for designing visual metaphors and spreading messages.  Photo manipulation is not my strongest skill but I will be looking at tutorials online, videos and some books.

I need to get used to photoshop as it will be my main tool for this project.  I have gotten so familiar to illustrator that I ignored the other packages which will not benefit me in future. If I gain a basic understanding of photoshop and start from the beginning, it will strengthen my ability towards my final project as the year goes on.

I will be designing a few already made pieces before I experiment on my own metaphor as I believe it's best to find out how they create the image rather than jump straight into my own idea.

Apart from thinking about photoshop I have also collected a number of books to help me gain an understanding of creative advertising and how it affects the public in Persuasion.  Currently I am writing down a few notes from these books that will be helpful for my research,  I have also booked a trip to the Glasgow design festival talks panel where designers discuss their project, career and their pipeline.  I may book another trip there for the exhibition in November.
